Yonkers Firefighter Killed, Others Injured

YONKERS (WPIX) - One firefighter is dead after battling a violent three-alarm fire that tore through a three-story home in Westchester early Friday morning.
During a 6 a.m. press conference, Yonkers Fire Commissioner Anthony H. Pagano, who was joined by Mayor Phil Amicone, confirmed the death of firefighter Patrick Joyce, 39, a 16-year veteran with the department.
Joyce was initially listed in serious condition at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Yonkers before he died from his injuries. He leaves behind a wife and children.
Two other firefighters - Lt. Joseph Murray, 54, and firefighter William Kanich, 38 - were transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx and are listed in critical condition.
Two residents were treated on the scene for smoke inhilation.
The three firefighters were investigating reports that there were people trapped on the third floor. No one was trapped on the upper level of the home.
The flames were intense, and it is unclear if the firefighters fell or jumped while trying to exit the third floor.
"We do believe that it was super heated up there," said Pagano, "And also as you can see behind me, this fire moved within seconds."
Reports also say two off-duty firefighters were travelling to the Yonkers home at around 5 a.m. to assist with the blaze. They were mere blocks away on Walnut Street when their car crashed head-on with another vehicle. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
Fire officials have deemed the blaze suspicious after determing the fire began in multiple locations on the first floor.
Local residents told PIX News there are five family units in the damaged home.

another brother was taken by god but all my wishes go to the family and the other fireman it is very sad to hear that another brotherwas stricken at a job that we all do to help others and sacrifice our lives for if it is arson i hope they punish the person or persons to the max im a assistant chief of a small company in northern eastern new york and it hurts way up here stay strong at a very emotional time

a horible thing that should never have happened if ny state got its head out of its ass, and did not exclude companies like fdny and other large city fire departments form the requirement that they were tring to enforce awhile ago making bailout equipment manditory for all internal firefighters.

A local TV report here indicates that rope bailout systems were being carried by these firefighters but there was not enough time to deploy. In any case these sytems should be mandatory as you suggest.
Words cannot repay you for your sacrifice to the community, rest in Peace Firefighter Joyce...

God Bless our fallen brother and god bless the 2 injured. It justs proves the point that even with the bailout systems when the sh*t hits the fan there is not time to deploy these sytems no matter how easy they are. WE need to go back to basics and remember to ladder all a possible points when we are in dwellings. Regardless, we lost another brother to a false claim of people trapped. May god have mercy on you and your family.

in the hype and excitement of any situation we need to remember all the basic fundamentals of firefighting i agree. and even with all the high tech stuff we have available today common sence is still the best weapon we will ever have. god bless all involved and help them through their times of sorrow.
