5 year ago, I joined the fire department as a cadet and was working to become a career firefighter. But soon after high school, I decided to take a leave of absence (as a volunteer) to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology. I still have my EMT license through an volunteer EMS agency but it's been a while since I've done any firefighting (the local dept is full with volunteers). Entering the military was a definite possibility when I was offered an ROTC scholarship after taking leadership training. But after taking the summer to decide, the military just isn't for me. I'm graduating in June 2010 with no idea what I want to do. I have looked into all the jobs in Fire/EMS and I just can't seem to decide which one is the best fit. I still remain in contact with the fire department I started with and they have offered to help in anyway they can. But I would really like to have a more solid idea of what it is I'd like to get out of firefighting. I'm still considering on just staying as a volunteer but I'm also leaning towards a career.
i would go into ems right now and persue my paramedic then after a while if i still had the itch for puting the wet stuff on the red stuff id go for it

Thanks for the input. I was originally going to the same college for Paramedic but the program was almost cut from buget and I was overworking myself to get in to the program before I graduated in 2010. That nearly killed me (literally) so I switched majors. And no, the department that I began with as a cadet isn't the one who won't take more volunteers.
A sad fact of life is that each vollie department has to insure each volunteer. It may be a case of lack of funds to add more members. Which really sucks if you have 20 vollies on your roster and only about 20% of them ever show up for training/calls!
