Anyone Training for this or even know about it??? Solar Flares 2012
My brother is in the air force. I was telling him how I had someone wanting to buy my generator. He told me not to because of the possibility of solar flares. What????? This must be pretty legitimate I found articles that support this possibility on Fox and NASAs websites. I know we have fuel storage but do we have generators for the house? Its predicted to happen 2012 but conspiracy theorist and some online scientist blogs say it will happen sooner. It has also happened in the past. In 1989 solar flares knocked out the entire city of Quebec, Canada for 9 Hours. See below story or attached pdf....

Gee, sure hope we don't have any plasma balls coming our way anytime soon. Regardless, loss of power on this type of magnitude can be caused from other natural causes that we all have to be prepared for.
Simple things like having a way to get fuel needs to be worked out in advance. Our fire stations for example all have emergency power but only above ground diesel tanks. What about all the pick up and sedans, Chief's vehicles... where are they going to get fuel?
Another example of why it is so important to be prepared...

Kinda the same metality here...not one who subscribes to conspiracy theories but fact remains it happened in 1989. This effects us in many ways the primary way the power grids go down in surges in transformers and melting wire. Not to mention there will be no early detection systems such as Fire Alarms. GPS wont work you may have no dispatch possibly. Your tic wont work. Your BA and other equipment may not work if they contain electronics. We have a couple thousand tranformers in our area if all exploded and there was no way for people to call in fires how long would it be before the fire was at our front door? Not to mention you may have no water.....municipal water supplies were one of the first systems to fail. Failure to prepare is preparing for failure. Be prepared Stolen quote from earlier post... In my opinion its not supernatural if it happened in 89. I guess if we prepared for these outrageous events than the predictable/natural ones should be a breeze.

They also always point out that the Myan calender, which was like the first written calender, ends in 2012, so a lot of the theorists out there are saying that 2012 is bringing the end of the world and somehow the mayans knew it.

It's all in hand- our crack team of I-don't-know-what-you-call-them are preparing for the event....
So as a fire department, how is this our problem?
Damnthing, I actually think that there's a lot of things here that could in fact become the department's problem.
When hospital's, nursing homes, health care facilities lose power, who will they call?
Who will be responding to all the alarms that activate when power drops in and out?
If there is lost power who responds to the increased number of fires to resident's houses as they try to light their way with candles?
Depending on time of year, you've either got people freezing to death or cooking themselves in the heat.
Me thinks this could be a bigger problem for the fire department than many realise if it were to occur....

I had plasma balls once...
But seriously, CB you make a good point about fuel. Our fuel pumps would be O.O.S. during a power outage, and our backup pumps, (the local BP station), may not work either during an outage of that magnitude. Our stations all have back up diesel genberators, but they'll only last so long.

I remember when the earth was supposeed to end back in 1985. There was even a book that somebody wrote about it where they quoted all this scientific mumbo jumbo.

Solar flares that knocked out power for 9 hours huh??........ I think I'll worry about another snowstorm ( I'll call "White Juan"),that knocked OUR power out for a week. ...lets see....no power in winter?? vs. no power in summer?? I'll vote for flares.
