(AP) TROY, N.Y.

More than a dozen firefighters are recovering after they were exposed to smoke and chemicals after a fire broke out inside a laboratory at an Albany-area college.

No one was seriously injured but Troy Fire Department officials say 15 firefighters were checked out at a hospital after Monday evening's blaze in a chemical lab at Rensselaer (rehn-suh-LEER') Polytechnic Institute.

Fire Chief Tom Garrett says the fire broke out about 6:20 p.m. on the third floor of a lab in a science building. He says a student was working alone and accidentally ignited the fire while conducting an experiment.

RPI officials say the student suffered burns to her hands and was treated at Troy hospital. The college's public safety department is conducting an investigation.
