Charleston Commission Plans Memorial and HQ

A commission is recommending that Charleston put a memorial and the fire department headquarters at the site where nine firefighters died in a blaze nearly two years ago.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that a 28-member commission made the recommendation to City Council on Tuesday for the Sofa Super Store site.
There was no cost estimate on the plan, which includes a training and educational facility.
Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said the recommendation could not be more appropriate.
The plan calls for a gardenlike outdoor memorial with individual markers for each of the firefighters. The center would feature a main element, possibly the emblem of the fire service, a Maltese cross.
Nine firefighters died in a fire at the store on June 18, 2007.
