I think its a very good idea to have a good working relationship with you local paid F.D. As for career ff's not liking the vol. I dont think that's really all that true. Now there are some that think because they earn a buck, that they know more or are better at what they do. That simply isnt true. But the macho complex goes on with the vol. too. In reality it all depends on the individual. I think the paid guys can be a great asset to the fire service. But we ALL, paid or vol, need to make sure our egos dont get in the way of our work.
As for WestPhilly's comment, vols are real firefighters. We go through the same training to get the same certs as the paid guys. It doesn't take any less training as a vol. to become certified, than it takes to become certified as a career firefighter. 150hrs if u get paid or not. And as for the fact that we dont fight real fires.....get a grip. Last time i checked, a residential home burns the same in the rural area as it does in the paid city district.
This is one topic that only serves to sturr up problems and isn't worth a reasonable response....Very lame in fact....get to a REAL issue...don't try and create one..........Paul

Lean over here so I can swat you on that nose, you little minx.
I spit my coffee when I read that.
Too funny.
They can't fire me because I volunteered. They can't fire you because you have a contract.
We got it made!

I got a grip. I grip the hose , ladder , pike pole and all the other tools just like just like any other firefighter. As for your friend above , don't you know how to be nice ? I have yet to see you write something nice in a reply. My question is legit . I have been on a scene when the chief said "no vollunteer will touch our tools" and have heard one say "when my men are called to help they will take over the scene". Or even the best " I don't trust your training " when his men are the ones that did some of the training .
Did not try to "sturr" up anything just asked a question and found some of the haters right here . Thanks for making my point.
Easy Mike...Don't hate on the Vols because the mighty wild cats have fallen. At least your football team won more than 3 games this season.

As far as the Paid VS. Volley discussion goes there are a lot of great paid fire fighters as well as a lot that aren't so great (like those that got a job because their great grandaddy was fire cheif 50 yrs ago). Same goes for Volleys. And it is usually the ones that are not so good that start crap between the 2 groups. As for me I am (just like many others) started as a volley and was lucky enough to get a job doing something I love.

The only thing that concerns me with the our local volunteer fire depts is the lack of training many recieve.
The ability of the paid to help the vollies to be better is the main thing i would like to happen . Knowledge can only make it better lack of knowledge can kill .
OK the hate is for the question...period. Not vollies.

Work on your relationship with the paid department.

There might be a history of idiots f'n up, look into that. Figure out what the issues are and if there is no reason other than prejudice then see what you can do to make matters better.

To ask a blanket question on a subject that gets hate stirred up is not the best move...here or elsewhere.

Be specific, i.e., "why does so and so fire department have no respect for us?"
Sorry folks the paid vs volly thing never goes anywhere. Discussion closed.
