Montgomery County is swearing in a new fire chief.

Richard Bowers is to be sworn in Tuesday after the county council confirmed his appointment last week.

Bowers has been with the department for 32 years and has held every rank and leadership role in the department. He has served as acting chief since October, when former Chief Thomas Carr left to head the Charleston, S.C., fire department.

County officials conducted a nationwide search to fill the post before selecting Bowers.
