I want to start a discussion here that seems to be an issue here in NJ. Has the Volunteer fire department become outdated? I pose this because the training requirements by the state are almost making it impossible to do them on your own time, and I wonder what impact the fire union has on training regulations. From running a paid house at one time the union never wanted full time members to be volunteers. I welcome your comments on this.

I can see where the training is almost impossible to attend on your own time, here in SC we have the same problem, but I don't see vlounteer depts becoming obsolete. The fire service in this country has been traditionally volunteer, and with the current financial climate in the US, more pressure is going to be placed on volunteers to supplement the shortfalls of paid depts, because we all know that municipalities love to save money. As far as the training is concerned I tell all my people that it's required by the state and I, as the training officer, do my best to accomadate the training schedule to the majority of the members work schedules, which as you probably know can be difficult in an all volunteer dept.
Very good point thanks for the input.
