By starting this as a new thread, I'm not pointing the finger at any individual. Let's see this as a way to teach people.

My writing isn't perfect. I make general typos, I make spelling mistakes. Although I always read again before posting, these things happen. For now, forget about spelling mistakes (or have a dictionary next to the keyboard as I have), let's look at the misuse of words.

Many times I've seen the word 'due' used where 'do' is the correct word, this being obvious by the context in which it is used. I suppose this could happen because there are places where the pronunciation for both words is the same?

do - can be used like "that truck needs a wash, I will do it"
due - can be used as "the house caught fire due to an accident"

Can anyone think of other words that could do with clarification? Or have I just wasted a couple of minutes?

I believe once my friend I read a post from you crabbing at someone for posting a ques that was not fire related.. Hummmmmmmm the kettle blackens
Yes Anne, I have commented like that. About non-fire threads in the General Firefighting and Rescue forum I believe.
I go to a fire station for work every shift, we talk fire/rescue/hazmat every shift. My mates want to talk fire because Im a Firefighter. Not talking fire??? Now this is bloody refreshing........
LMFAO!!!! I know its not proper english, and I can say it on national TV in Australia, but I would rather not offend anyone over there :)
+1 on the cylinders, our media seems to think the 21% in the air is not enough, and we need to breath from our "oxygen tanks" :)
DT, I wanted to add to the laughter, but your comment deserves to stand alone! :-)
yea I'm sure that so much different.. Firefighting forum........ English class I do believe .. Thats ok Tony I still respect you...
I was under the impression that this particular forum was for all NON FIRE related topics? This would surely fall under that category I would think, and therefore I can not see a problem with this thread. Perhaps If you do not like this thread you should stick to the other fire related forums? As I have said before, it is refreshing and quite light hearted to talk about things other than Fire Rescue HAZMAT...........
Chris with no disrespect to you but yea not between you and me and you might want to look at the post that happen last year when this topic was approched and the same guys jumped on the guy who brought it up..... Just making a point.. But again thanks for that suttle post.....
What; did everybody get up this morning and take a big dose of SNARKEY?
Christ; people are getting shot. Little kids are being kidnapped and killed. Higher unemployment. Earthquakes; wildfires; suicide bombings.
Can't we be light for just a little while?
Crap!

Ah; I'm just messin' with ya!
It's crazy that the English language is such a "hot" button issue, though.
Some of it drives me crazy, but thank God, I won't let it affect how I write.
Even if I had texting capability on my phone-and I don't-I would refuse to abbreviate my messages. I would burn up the recipient's texting minutes.
In my job, I have tossed more than a few resumes that were peppered with spelling and grammatical errors.
Too harse?
Well, then; I'm just an old fuddy duddy.
A fuddy duddy with his own blog!:-)

Seen and scene. Two very different ones.

To, too, two

want spelled as whant (see this one often)

witch and which (far different words)

My favorite (I'm a fifth grade teacher also) "pennies" is often spelled "penis" by the younger kids. Grading papers and correcting this is difficult.
