My department is looking into either gettig rid of the humat valve that we have or getting another one for our ladder. I am looking for any info/expierence either good or bad with them so that we can make the right choice with the budget.
A little info about our area: We run a 100' ladder truck with 2000gp single stage pump(400 gal tank) and an engine with a 2250 single stage pump(1000 gal tank). Our area is aprox half with and half without hydrants. The hydrants at most will produce 1000 gpm at 100 psi until the water authority can turn up a pump station(aprox 20 mins or so). Both units carry 1000' of 5 inch line and mutual aid supplies up to 4 other engines all with 5 inch.
Thanks in advance for the info and I will post what our decision was along with the reasons we went the way we did

My department got rid of the Humat valve. If you have enough pressure from your hydrants and don't consistantly hook up a second truck to boost pressure than I don't see the need for the Humat. That the biggest reason why we got away from it. That and it does not provide a way to disconnect from the hydrant if there is a problem with the hydrant.
I love the Humat valve for one reason.

1. It allows the second engine to boost your water without the intruption of water supply.

That alone makes it worth your time. What really should be your determining factor is your response district. If you have a tone of commercial or multi family dwellings then the humat valve will be good. If you have a ton of long lays then the humat valve will be good.

If you are dealing with short lays and single family dwellings then I would say that a "dual hitch valve" may be better. Since the frequency of needing "tons" of water may be few and far between.

So thats my 2 cents
