How many ppl do you have on your roster vrs. how many you can count on to show up for training, meetings, MVA's, fires, etc.? What if any is your policy for "weedingout" the ones who just are on it to say they are on it?
We currently have around 20 on the roster. 7 are true interior firefighters, the rest are medical only or just dont show up. we average 2 to 5 on medical calls and 4 to 12 on structures. Thats not counting the Explorers, we regularly have 8 of the 13 show up for most calls that are not during school hours.
at least you have explorers to fall back on. On that note what are you allowing them to do at a fire scene? I am just courious as to what they can provide to a dept. We have never had explorers and will prob never will. I dont know why. SO how big of an area ou cover?
we cover 110 square miles and have auto aid agreements with all departments boardering ours for structure fires. the explorers are not allowed to engage in active fire supression but are able to help with water supply, rehab, clean up and any other task that will free up a firefighter to be able to engage in fire supression. I run the explorer program, this is our 7th year. I am the sole person responsible for taking care of the program, it is alot of work but I have had 2 become full time firefighters, and have 4 more thinking about it. So all in all the benifits out weigh the work. I started the program by proposing it to the chief and ensured him that I would run it with little help from the department. The department pays for all registration fees for the kids but the Explorers raise money to buy their shirts.
I would be interested in talking to you more about your explorers program. Maybe see about starting one here. Wouldnt have the first clue about what or where to begin. IF you would care to help I would like to know allthe $$$ facts first. Around here $$$ Talks and if I could show little to no $$ from dept with fu ture $$$ income from this program ie explorers who become vols with us who already have training. I belive I might be able to "sell" the idea to the chief and Board. Thanks and stay safe.
I will get together some info for you. Dont expect a lot of support from the Boy Scouts with your program. I train my Explorers just like I train my regular Volunteers. I will go into more detail later.
Stay Safe

We have about 12 on the roster. We don't do medical call right now, for a brush fire we get about 4/6, for a mva 4/8, and a structure im not sure ( have not had one while i've be on). Only about 5 for us will go into a structure. It's the same 5 the will run the jaws. We cover the entire county for jaws, + we go about 10 miles into oklahoma for jaws calls. Fire's, we cover about 225 sq. miles, but in the day time we help cover the entire county, 675 miles. We don't have auto aid right now.
we have 15 full time with 3 shifts 2 with 5 & 1 shift with 4 we must keep 3 on duty for staffing & 3 vol. we run fire & ems 1st responce, with kckfd for transport. about 900 calls per year & to date 4/1/09 we are @ 198 this year.
