Do I start Medic classes or wait until I have some run time as a basic?

So I'm in a dilemma. I want to start Medic classes this spring, but me starting work with the Fire Dept was pushed back 2 months so I haven't had any run time as a Basic. I am aggravated because I want to start working but it seems like they totally forgot about it and I don't want to bug them. Anyways...so a few people have told me to not start medics until I get some run time, and was wondering if anyone else agrees? If I choose to start in the fall, I will take the fire investigator class that my school offers. More training the better. I just passed my Level II State test (YAY!) so I am pretty fresh with all of the firefighting stuff. Bah. I'm puzzled.

Let me clear a few things up. I mean I will take the fire investigator class in the spring, work my butt off getting experience in the spring and summer, and then start medic classes. I am an EMT-Basic already. And I am not letting other people make my decisions, I am asking for opinions of those who have already done things.

exactly! there's no such thing as too much fire department pre-employment experience that you can bring to the job. the analogy used to be that every time you run a call, you keep a mental snapshot of the incident, learning from the call and filing it away for later use or synthesis. we used to call this a mental slide show that you could reply when needed. now, I suppose, you would call it a mental powerpoint presentation? anyway, my point here is that as many snapshots you have stored in the internal memory banks, the better job you will do and the more you will contribute to both the crew and toward quality patient care.
The longer that you can give yourself in the field, the better paramedic you will become. It is BLS first and then ALS. Get that concept under your belt and fully understand that and it will help you become a good paramedic. The work expierience will also help you in paramedic school. Learn ACLS before you sign up for school and it will make your schooling much easier. Become very familiar with with EKG tracings and treatment regiments. Good luck with your career.
In my experience, you'll have more confidence later as a paramedic if you get the hang of being just a EMT. Its a lot more than just knowing what to do. Its getting used to people and dealing with many situations. You could ride with experienced medics and pick there brains. Also, working as a EMT you don't have all the responsiblity lying on you yet, I'd would work as a EMT for a while to see the different pressures there are to deal with and you might realize that being a medic is not for you. You might be happy with being just a EMT. Don't just do it for the money, people who do that are doing it for the wrong reasons and don't do a great job. Hope you find what your looking for.
I have to agree with get some street time under your belt with being an EMT. I am an EMT and from what I experience if you aren't a good EMT then how can you be a good Medic. Just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide. Do your best and study hard. Stay safe.....
