How many Depts out there are proactive in their community for Fire Prevention??? How many of the Depts give away smoke detectors to homes that need them? Do you also go instal them for those who are not able to install them?? How many Dpets know that you can buy 10 year Nicad Batteries for Smoke Detectors??How many Depts know that there is federal grant money out there for fire prevention activities such as this?? How many depts are familiar with fire code in reguards to having smoke detectors in your home?? Does your Dept do any type of Fire Prevention in your Community?? Shouldnt we as Fire Fighters take a more ProActive role in our communities and become more involved with our communities??? Yes, i understand that there are not enough hours in a day sometimes for such activities.. But every little bit helps, and the more we do for our community the more support we will get from the community..

I wish ours would do something like that, When I was in Iowa the Dept there had a battery up program where we would go and change batteries and install detectors if they needed them, it was mainly the elderly who was the main focus though.
were focousing on about 200 homes in our community.. were more concerned about making sure homes have smoke detectors in them.. sometimes u have to take the inititive and make the suggestion, as well as be the one who is in charge of the commity for it..give it shot.. u never know until u bring it up..
Yes, we do all this, we keep a stash of them in our engine and if we're called to a home and we find none than we'll hand them out. Also we checked with our local Home Depot and they donate 12 new smoke alarms to use every 4 months and sell other ones to use at their cost.
I think the best way to accomplish any of this is in the schools. Most adults are set in their ways and already understand what the importance of such things could be. Working in the schools with the children are the way to go. We have been going into the schools for several yr's now. The kids can than put the pressure on the parents by asking questions about smoke detectors and extinguisher's, about escape plans and where the family should meet. I remember yrs ago, a couples weeks after going into the school, we had a house fire and the mother was commenting how her 6yr old really took charge, told her get down and crawl outside and than we'll go to the neighbor's and call the fire department. She like us were very proud of her son and it proved to us that this does work.
now theres a good idea.. i will discuss that with my chief.. thanks for the input...
we do that also.. we go into the elementary school and teach fire prevention... but, also take into cinsideration that some families dont have the funds available to do this... some families only have one paycheck that they have to stretch to make ends meet, and some families are on a fixed income, just like the ederly for example, and arent able to afford a smoke detector... so by having the smoke detector program, it enables them to have smoke detectors like your suppose to have in your home.. your suppose to have one for every bedroom, and 1 on every floor of the house.. that is per the state fire marshal here in ohio..
