SILVER CITY, Okla. (AP) -- A Silver City firefighter has died after helping to extinguish a grass fires near the northwestern Creek County community.

Silver City Fire Chief Brutus Beall says 45-year-old John Adams of Silver City died late Friday after parking a fire truck along State Highway 51 and collapsing.

Beall says Adams was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have said an arsonist set fires around Silver City on Friday that charred more than 600 acres. Although most of the fires have been contained, a few hot spots remained Saturday.

We are all saddened at the loss of our brother, my dept and 7 others were there assisting Silver City at the scene. I believe funeral is set for wed. and will have full fire dept honors.
