We have several "cisterns" ,buried old fuel tanks set up with large suction connections and a few dry hydrants into farm ponds.The lower half of our town just got hydrants through about 2/3 of their district.

We are fortunate to have no more than 5 miles in any direction to get a hydrant if it comes down to that. I am however a great supporter of go knock a hole in the ice and toss your hard suction in a farm pond or creek (if you have those options). Otherwise, call a bunch of tanker, and call them early! I am in SW Ohio and it does not really get cold enough to freeze creeks to the bottom much and even when it does the ponds are still an option for us. The worst ice (or best if you skate) I have ever seen was about 18 inches (about 45 cm). I would have quickly found a hydrant before I tried to bust that, but in your case that might be a situation you may have to face. If you have a lake you could draft from an ice auger like use by fishermen would not be a horrible idea to buy and keep in one rig. Maybe even have a couple of guys that if there is a fire their job is to grab a pick up truck and an auger and go punch a hole in the nearest lake (providing you get a big enough hole to put your hard suction in) and help set up a fill site for tankers. Just trying to think outside the box since I really don't have to get that extreme (unless the water system goes dead).

Not sure if this would help you or not. We are lucky to be in a hyranted and non hydranted areas. We also have a few dry hydrants but I don't rely on them. We use a device call Turbo Draft. Once you cut through the ice it could be dropped in. Hope that helps and stay warm

Ok thanks what's a turbo draft? I've never hear of this device, how does it work?
