Twenty-four years ago today, a propane explosion in Buffalo, New York claimed the lives of five firefighters. The sound of the blast was heard 35 miles away.

Here is a link to a story written by Mike Lombardo, now Commisioner of the BFD:

Ladder 5 RIP
Here is a link to an article in today's Buffalo News, written about the young son of one of the five firefighters: http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/533511.html
I had only 4 years as a paid on call firefighter when this happened. It is one of the events that taught me how much I still needed to learn about firefighting, the family bond, and living each day with a sense of purpose. I was 24 and bullet-proof, or so I thought. Thanks for the reminder and the links Joe, you are one of the good ones!
thanks to everyone for always remembering my brother and the other guys. It is my hope that all firemen will always remember and use every precaution when propane is involved in a call and maybe those precautions will prevent a tragedy. Thanks to all for your service to your community and you comments.

Tim Austin(brother of firefighter Mike Austin)
Tim, we will never forget the sacrifice Mike and his brothers made so long ago. The BFD has always been near and dear to my heart since I was born and raised in the area.

Thanks for bumping this post back up to the top. God bless you and your family; we will always mourn your loss.
