I wan't to become a Jr. FireFighter for my local FD, but the problem is that my mom is trying to come up with every excuse she can for me not too. Like im to busy, she's to busy, it's almost christmas or (insert holiday), and etc. She also suggested that I try and start an explorer post insted. The thing is, My state hasnt had a very good record when coming to Fire exploring. The only Explorer program in my state has is an 2 hours away from me.

Here's a bit about me and my Fam.
My great Grandfather the Fire Chief for the DAFB (Dover Air Force Base) FD, My cus is a FF, and I have over 10 family members that are FF going beck 3 generation. Both my moms and my dads.
Im 15, soon to be an Eagle Scout and BlackBelt, and 300+ hours of com servis.

What could I do to change her mind.

Thanks,
Austin

Well find out from your local FD what their requirements are. I know mine, you can't join until you're 16.
Take her to your local station for a visit and talk to the officers and personnel there.Let her hear directly from them what you can and can't do.Maybe that will help.Sounds like she is afraid for you and is just trying to protect you.
yeah that works pretty well. when i joined my mom stayed for the meeting our adviser Sgt.Lee told the parents that this is not totally danger free but if u pay attention and act smart u will be OK (so my mom was uneasy ) i was only supposed to stay for the meeting and that was it but once i came back to the car with all my newly issued gear then she had no choice but to let me and the next week i was already getting compliments from my adviser about how I'm a good fire explorer and will make a good firefighter so i say do what Robert says and let her talk to the officers and try to talk to the officers before hand so they know that u really wanna get in and they should help u out.
my parents were not really concerned about me being a jr ff bc she knows all the ff's around here and has known most of the jrs for years and years. Well i invited my friends jessica and annie to come up there and jessica (we call her vegas bc she just moved to pleasureville kentucky a little over a yr ago) parents were worried bc of all the guys. This was before we had a lot of girls or more than one female adviser. Well her mom sat in on the meeting and it was the day we were learning about types of fire (with examples). It worked out bc her mom was fascinated with the experiments we were doing....

Just try and get your mom to sit in on the meetings, let her see you trying turnout gear maybe get the advisers to explain your particular program and give a tour of the station. maybe your mom would understand then why you want to do this and be more likely to give you the chance to try. Just remember you might actually be doing too much and its hard to fit it in your schedules. If your mom is still against it try and get the ff in your family to talk to her about it.
Good luck!!!
Jess
im with one in ohio and i told my mom that the crew will not put me in any danger or any situation that can get me hurt. about her being to busy see if one of the crew members could pick u up before the shift and see if she could pick u up. also take her to the dept. that u want to be with and let her talk to the company officer
hey,
Thanks for all the suggestions. I let you all know what happens.
I know how you feel I had the same problem I just sat my mom down and I talked to her about it. Ask her why she don't want you to join as a junior. And I took her in to the station to talk to all the firemen.
Just explain to her how mutual the fire field is . And you would assisting the firefighters in saving lives and getting good self discipline at the same time.
you can tell her what i tell my friends that ask me why i want to do something as dangerous

"life is dangerous in general, the diffrence between living and being a fire fighter is that your are trained for disaster and you have the tools to protect you"
My mom did the same thing but i talked her into it saying that i will be with the most responsible people possible in the scene.
i mean i have no probs because my dads chief of the fire dept. im at and my mom was a medic but she quit to work @ sum hospital
I would say "Mom....this has been in our family for a long time....and it would wrong not to carry on the tradition"...that is the only reasson that i joined the FD
