Having a sense of humor is always key to getting through some of the more "difficult times." Great point by you
Congratulations. When I give advise to new firefighters it is almost always the same. Keep quiet, listen to your officers and instructors, work hard, and formulate your own opinion about your coworkers. If you were a volunteer before your new department might not work the same as your volly dept. Never say "we did it this way at vollyville".
If your new spend your down time learning the apparatus your department has. Don't be afraid to ask the older firefighters they may seem gruff but they are always willing to help a new guy. Read everything you can. And for god sakes don't be too sensitive.
Good luck and welcome to the brotherhood.
Hi again,
Thanks to all of you for the great advise and well wishes. if you have any more advise at all, please share as i want to take on all that i can to be the very best fire fighter i can possibly be.
cheers
curtis
Congrats!!! I've only been a Firefighter for a little while myself but I would have to say ask a lot of questions and get the "old" guys in on some hands on...there is a bunch of stuff that doesn't get pulled of the apparatus until new folks come around and then it's a learning experience for you but a refresher for the other guys. They might act your bothering them but watch when you get started everyone will be out helping you learn and it remotivates them. Once again welcome aboard the most awesome brother/sisterhood you could ever be a part of. Keep us posted as to how things are going!
Stay Safe:)
