I like the fact that they are thinking "outside the box" from traditional design set up . Like you mentioned if its safe and practical , bring it on ....
Love the idea of trying new things... Only time will tell if it is safe and effective. I would love to also see the cost of these SCBA's. Cost is always an issue with alot of our rural departments. The technology is out there, but can we afford it?
I agree on the testing ... It will have to be thoroughly tested by the NFPA . If it will ever make it as the new standard for the SCBA requirements . We all know just how expensive it is to buy new equipment , especialy when the there is new electronic technology attached to it ... for example the wireless centinel system on the Scotts packs .
It might take a few years to get approved. I know I would want to make very sure that the new "air packs" are sound and reliable before I put any of my guys in them in an IDLH atmosphere. I want to know that they will withstand the heat.
I'm not sure how much weight NFPA would have on testing the product itself. I don't think that is part of NFPA. I dunno, does Underwriters Labs do that? I wonder how much cheaper the new technology is than the bottles? Did you notice that there wasn't anyone with a mask on in the clip? Looks like they are going in the right direction and I will bet that more people will be more receptive to the idea than you imagine. Change is often good.
I'd love to learn more about this new SCBA. How is it possible that it holds as much air as a current SCBA? How much will they cost? They just could be the wave of the future!
Very interesting. Does anyone have any links to more information about it?
I agree with others that it would need to be extensively tested and proved before I'd want to put any of my men in it, but new designs, concepts and technology should be explored and tested.
