Today was a day to remember the people from the wars, but today we lost one. Our compan chaplain was on his motorcycle riding and enjoying the day. A car was at a stop sign and didnt see him comming. He t-boned the car with his bike. He was flown out via "Lifereach" helicopter. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. This is all the info I have at this time, I will try to keep updates when I get the information.
Just an update. The funeral for our fallen chaplain Gene Franklin will be on Friday @ 2 pm. The whole fire dept. here in Sumter, SC will be at the funeral home. He will be missed. Gene was with the fire dept. since the 70's. He was the kind of person who you could call at any hour with a problem. He was also a pastor of a local church.
The Funeral was more than most could ask for. Three different honor gaurds, the Final alarm, the ringing of the bell, the giving of the helmet to family. It was the best and worst day we as fireman could ask for. To see pics of some of the procession and honor gaurd you can go to www.theitem.com which is our local paper. I will upload some pics shortly. The funny thing about the whole funeral was that while we were waiting on it to start, the fire alarm in the church started going off with for no reason. It was a black day here in Sumter County, SC, but as we left the gravesite the pagers started going off left and right. We all said in the engine on our way back to the station was that it was Gene saying it was time to go back to work.
