what type of scanner is best?

ok so i wanna get a scanner so i can listen to the calls... i have the codes i need but i really don't know what type of scanner to get. I just want something i can keep in my room so i know when i could be called out, before they call my phone (juniors are called when there is a scene they can respond to).

You can find decent deals on fleabay for used units if you're looking to keep costs low. Also, price depends on if you need HF, VHF, UHF or 800.
