Well I am a junior firefighter and I knew I wanted to do firefighting sense I was probably 5...I grew up with firetruck in hand!
I think the question was why do you want to be a firefighter?
That makes sense. But, perhaps after you've been involved with firefighters for a couple of years we'll get to keep you! And the PD will lose out?

I've read threads (elsewhere) where people talk about the use of dogs in the fire service. Searching for things like accelerant traces and victims. Ever thought of that side of working with dogs?
i joined the fire dept. because it always was something that kept my interest. i started wanting to be a firefighter when i was about 17 but never got the chance to until now. hopefully though my kids will grow up wanting to join the brotherhood and become firefighters themselves.
I grew up around the fire department. so its in my blood. and I started dreamin of in when I first started dreaming. lol
I think we need to coordinate with our local schools. When I belonged to a department in Maryland, they the department, where able to get the school to set up a internal fire department made up of school age members of the local fire departments. They elected a Chief, a Asst Chief, and some Captains, from their in school membership. This group was covered under each FD's insurance (for you who sweat the load) and carried out task's in each area's of fire.
They made sure extinguishers where up to date, fire escapes where not blocked, and during any fire alarm or drill, they took charge of evacuation and then reported to the Chief/Asst Chief for further direction. They also reported the activation of a alarm to the 911 operators and serve as a first on scene assessments. In one particular call, a art room actually caught fire, the members evacuated the school, added needed information to the 911 operator of the situation within the school, and actually extinguished the fire utilizing multiple fire extinguishers by the time the first engine arrived. All this utilizing the Incident Command System within their own organization.

Now yes, many things could have happened, but let me tell you, their membership and ours, along with the other departments in the local area, skyrocketed after this incident. Why... Adults trusted Kids by giving them responsibility and the means to carry it out their duties.

They also treated the job (firefighting) as a job. All the members age 14-18 had to have a resume, good grades 75 - 100, recomendations from at least 4 teachers, notices sent to the parents of the job dangers along with signed permission paperwork, a badge was given to each, along with a patch to be attached to semi-cool looking uniform. Most openly carried their badge and provided others with information of the organization and duties.

Now at the department level, utilize your 14/15 year old's as junior FF's and the 16-18 as members with restrictions. All this can help with recruitment as each year, more and more are able to see what the fire service is about and again each trusted and treated with respect. Good Luck..
P.S. The 16-18 year old's could sleep in on weekends and holidays, filling the engines and the ladder with bodies waiting to go before a driver could show up... you would be surprised how a large screen TV and a video game machine (you pick) and the anticipation of a call play well together.
I joined when i was 15, i wanted to be a firefighter ever since i could remember. And my dad was a firefighter so its in my blood.
Actually my dad still is hes my chief now.
We had a building fire in Antwerp not so long ago and it was the first time I had see a fire dog.. The dog came up to the door and sat right down as soon as it went thru the door.. this dog and handler was great together...
