whats so great about leather? im not making fun or anything, i seriously want to know the diffrences
Leather Helmets have been used in the fire service since there has Been a "fire service" so There is a certain amount of Tradition involved, Unlike many of the man made composites, the leather has Always been there.. they have stood up to the riggors of Firefighting since he 1840's compare that to other options over the years, aluminum, fiberglass, Polycarbinates have all had chances None have hada record of service anywherenear Close to that of reenforced animal flesh ....I own 4 and have been assigned my 5th, Each is as serviceable today as the day I bought them, two are NOT approved so cannot be legally worn by Osha and NFPA standards, which is a whole nuther fallacy, since in the late 70's Cairns Looked at the way They had to manufacture (Labor intensive) and materials Intensive, compared to Other Cheaper helmets such as MSA's Fiberglass and later Polycarbinate "Top Guard" (Basicly a Batting Helmet with long back brim) and They're own "wheelchock" 990 version which was the most uncomfortable saladbowl You could imagine.. BUT from an economic standpoint, what would you chose To stamp out 300 hundred units an Hour? or 20 leathers a day, each going through about a month of manufacture time..? when The NFPA was looking to upgrade standards, They approached the Manufacturers 1st since they are
the "experts" and had them devise tests to make these helmets "better" The numerous destructive and non destructive tests, the Leather helmet met, all but one, and that was penetration... taking a hardened steel "nail like" punch and pressing it into the helmet crown under pressure, the crown was penetrated... supposedly this would simulate "any falling debris"... lets look at it this way, If 50 lbs of brick fall from 2 or 3 storys and hit you square on the head chances are your going to break your neck..and in some situations, guys have been struck glancing blows andended up with the brim around they''re necks because the impact absorbed by the flexability of the leather... Cairns tryed they're best to get out of the leathers buisiness, But Cities like FDNY, Boston, San Fransico as wll as hundreds of smaller departments protested and FDNY even told Cairns They wanted to BUy the dyes to cut the leather and would manufacture they're own helmets if nessisary... Many guys began The Leather forever Movement, to promote and keep Carns in the buisness... Cairns in a manner "lost" the battle and were afraid IF they gave up the leather, but Tryed to sell other stuff like turn out gear, they might loose any market share because disgruntled purchasers would use "other manufacturers first " They're answer, N5a which met the minimal Osha standard, and the similar N6a ( sam houston) which met the NFPA standard at that time.. ( eye protection) by adding goggles... The "problem "is with improvements " the cost went from 60 dollars for the 5a (in 1976) to 180 dollars for an n5a in 1980, obviously inflation and labor costs have increased, BUt for Me I would still committ and buy a leather

I can tell you this over 160 years more then a few guys have been protected By leather helmets, I suspect 5 or 6 times any other material.. I've never heard of too many firefighter fatalities caused By a hardened punch device being pressed through the guys melon by a press that delivers 200 lbs per square inch... Kevlar aint gonna do it either.. lol

SO, PRIDE is a big part , I like hearing from the nay sayers how heavy they are, so IF nothing else they are good exercise... I'd rather wear a leather then a salad bowl ....

My 1st leather is twice as old as you are , and would wear it into any structural fire today as then, if not for the fact, That IF something happened to me (burned an ear) they would Blame it on my helmet and not cover my medical.. :)

Check out how labor intensive they are @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Btv8Kpg24pw
