Fire Prevention Week is almost here. I am the fire/life safety coordinator for our county. We are doing alot of the norm that week. We are going to all 3 schools in our county with the EDITH trailer. We have a variety of prizes and such for the kids. What are some things that you are doing in your area? Are there particuliar community events you host? What is the most effective way of dispersing information and education in your communities?

We dont have a school in our district, but we help out our main mutual aid dept where all our kids go to school. They have the kids come to the fire shed, and a FF does a little lecture, and we do some demonstrations. They get to see all the trucks, and get some booklets. Its aimed for K-2nd grades. They also go up to the school and attend other grade levels. We do a Fire drill with the fire trucks coming in and getting into position at the school.
My department is doing an open house on fire prevention week. This open house is used to award prizes per age bracket for a poster contest where the children create a poster using the National Fire Prevention week message. The open house also gives the community a hands on approach to see the departments abilities and equipment. Our department also goes to each of the schools to teach Fire prevention to the children.
I personally will be doing a Fire Prevention week demo and class for my Daughters pre-school class.

I think that fire departments should use every opportunity to gain good PR that they can. Open houses, assisting in food drives, fund raisers (not just f.d. ones) are all good opportunites to interact with the people you serve. Interaction will form a good relationship between the department and the public and make it much easier for yourselves come budget meetings and they will latch onto concepts such as fire prevention easier.
We do a cookout for the 3 small towns we cover that are in our district we also have a school.
We go to the schools and talk to the children about fire safety. On October 12th, we're having our open house. We usually do a couple of vehicle extrication demos, medevac helicopter landing, fire extinguisher demo, tanker/porta-tank demo, set up the aerial ladder, E.D.I.T.H. trailer, Station tours, etc. A few years ago, we held promotion ceremonies in front of the public at our open house.
