We have a few memebers that are dedicated to the department, however as an officer when do you tell them they cannot dive anymore. Common sense states if they are a danger. I am wondering if there is a NFPA guideline or By-Laws.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thats a good one. I will be following this one, because in the past, all our older members have taken themselves OOS before they became a safety issue, and have never forced the chief's hand to remove them from driving duties. We have had dangerous younger drivers that have been removed, but never drivers that were too old to drive.
demand physicals with a doctors signature signing them off to full active duty. Make sure that the physical includes the differing aspects of fire/rescue services offered so the doctor understands what his patient is going to experience.

NFPA 1582, 2000 edition

2-4.1.3

In addition to the annual medical evaluation, the fire department shall include a medical examination according to the following schedule:
(1) Ages 29 and under- at least every 3 years.

(2) Ages 30 to 39- At least every 2 years.

(3) Ages 40 and above- every year.

The appendix for this standard states the exam may be conducted more frequently based on medical conditions and coronory risk factors

Granted this is the 2000 edition, but it is a great standard to start from.

Osha has a mark at CON OSHA 1910-134. This states that it is up to the physician to determine the frequency of evaluations, although haz mat regulations (federal) say yearly. Plain and simple, cover their asses, cover your ass, and set up a mandatory physical once a year, and after any medical issue (heart attack, fall, broken bone etc) get a medical clearance from a doctor before allowing back to full time duty.
I never knew this before, but I'd say some of our best drivers or over 50 because thats all they want to do is drive and as long as they can do it right which they do, its a win win thing, Thanks for the info too:)
We don't have that problem i am the oldest at 45 . But my problem is that the young ones want to drive . Some i trust others ain't no way in hell they will get behind the wheel .
I am not for sure age wise if there is any. We have a guy who is close to 80 who drives for a dept 8 miles from us.. Very good driver... We have to have our driver drive so many times with a trainer, then so many time to a fire before cut loose.. Maybe when you get guys up there in years hold the same test for them.. Must pass before they can drive.. We put our drivers thru lots of test . Hills,narrow roads,bakingto drop stations, half of tank of water... speed and control... I know it is hard for older drivers to let go ,but for the safety of themselfs,may have to get out of the truckk. Young kids are the same some just not mature enough to hande the truck.. If you drive it you must run it policy also...
In my state I believe the only requirement is a drivers license and the blessing of the Chief to operate an emergency vehicle. Take either away and that's the only recourse available. Driving is a privilege not a right.
I am not sure we have an age limit in our Dept. if so I have not heard of it or seen it yet. Our Capt. is near 70 years old and he is still a driving instructor for teenagers.
thats funny Damon. i dont like driven the tanker. i like driven the brush trucks and the rescue truck. im still learning on the pumpers
