I'm ashamed to tell you all, but i just realized that I've lived in my house for 6 years now and have yet to practice a fire drill with my wife and children. We did it at my old house, but that's no excuse.
I hand out the E.D.I.T.H. booklets at firehouse tours, when doing extinguisher training, and during fire safety week, yet I still have not acted on the information inside them.
This week I am going to make the time once and for all to make sure that my family knows what to do and where to go in the event of a fire in our home. (especially if I'm working at the firehouse). I strongly encourage you all to do the same if you have not already. Stay safe!
Careful doing it though- the blindfolded part is how we ended up with a second child!!!!! :) Only joking.
We would take turns- lie in bed blindfolded, crawl from our bedroom and take a teddy bear or something from the bed and make your way to either the front or back door, open it and get out. Return for child #2 and repeat.
I'm the same way Lutan we never practiced until our child was born and now its once a year and we go over the fire safty tips with the kid who is now 9 and we use the smoke detector as a warning system to start the drill. when we are done we replace the bateries in the smoke detectors.
After posting this thread, I had my family do regular exit drills. We've even planned for certain contingencies, like when I'm on shift at the F.D. and the wife and kids are home alone. Or, when just the kids are home. I feel very confident that my family will be safe if confronted by a fire in our home.
Although since I work in the same town in which I live, I have no idea how I'll feel when the tones drop and it's my address that comes over the radio!
the last time I crawled out of the house on all fours, there were pots and pans flying over my head... but her name wasn't EDITH, it was Cassie and she was pissed
