Fire prevention week is almost here, and with that I have a couple of questions to everybody concerning fire prevention week,
To show that we are doing something we put up some banners, distibute leaflets to friends and have an open house, which last year had a total of about four visitors. It looks good on a report but actualy does nothing.
So my questions to all
1) How many stations actually do anything useful during the week and if you do, what?
2) Should more be done, free home inspections for the month for instance.
3) Is fire prevention week still useful? does it acomplish anything or is just given lip service?
4) Keep it, scrap it or move it to a better time of the year?

I personally think we should keep it. My office has been working for quite some time to prepare for Fire Prevention week at work, and we have had a good turn out every year. We also provide voluntary fire extinguisher training and recruit for our fire brigade. It is a way to get your organization a little recognition for hard work all year long. We take the time to recognize accomplishments of our fire brigade members, thank our management and recognize other supporters along the way.

We hand out literature on Fire safety in the home and the office, disaster preparedness information, and even have a drawing for folks who stop by the display. A lot of work goes into it and it gives folks a sense of pride in what they are doing.

In my opinion, Fire Prevention week is not only useful, but essential to both public education and public safety. It gives us a public forum for our cause, and a national platform to set out our concerns. We are all here for the safety of the public. While Fire Prevention Week does require public participation, which is often difficult to solicit, the more we make ourselves known, the more involved people will become in their own safety. The better prepared the public is to prevent a fire or accident in the workplace or at home, the better we can do our jobs as emergency responders.

Thanks,

Hey Huw....We go to the schools and put on a presentation...Have tours of the Firehouse with Firefighters on site in turn-out gear...Home visits....We even get the county owned "smoke house" for the kids to go through....Then if time permits we have guys at the school and let the kids get a little hose time....Of course Sparky the Firedog shows up as well.....Use a little imagination....We are a Volunteer Department and the people of our community support us....we in turn like to do what we can to stay in the publics eye with a positive approach.....
We visit the two local schools, one is a grade school, the other is a DK school. The grade school usually comes to us. We talk to them, show them the trucks, time permitting let them play wth the hoses, etc... You can also contact the National Fire Academy to get free handouts. Flyers, coloring books, all sorts of stuff. We order every year, and hand it out. Sometimes you can even get Smokey Bear stuff from the DNR.
In the Virgin Islands we do a lot , we visit schools, have station visits, host a jamboree for over 2,000 kids, have a fun day, BBQ competition, it is the only time of year that the entire department comes together, I love it!
