The fire service was all volunteer when it started, there are more vol. depts. than paid, and I still say to this day that Volunteer Firefighters are the backbone of the fire service.....I volunteered for 35 yrs..

Hi everyone,5yrs on a volunteer dept and we hang with paid departments in training .some full time paid departments don't want nothing to do with us .not even to give blood for them in need ....that's sad! BUT that's o.k..we have mutual aid each other. if it comes down to it we there to help.

13 years and counting. I run with at least 2 departments at all times, but not departments that mutual aid each other. I plan to volunteer until I die.

Most of you are making me feel old. I have been doing this for 13 years. Had I not been the rebellious teenager and joined the same department as my brother when I was 17, I would have been doing this for 22 years. Instead I waiting until I was 26 and joined a department closer to where I lived then, recruited by a former coworker.
