Here's another story of a homeowner who didn't pay the subscription fee for fire protection, believing that, if he had a fire, the fire department would come anyway.
He was wrong.
This follows the same line of thinking of districts who shut down their departments, believing that, if they needed fire protection, they could rely on mutual aid.
What is wrong with that thinking?

With EMS, you can bill the patient's insurance company or medicare. There is a huge industry built around medical debt collection and the expected ration of bad medical debts is relatively well known. FWIW - there is no such thing in Australia, as we don't have medical debts.
The problem with a "per service" fee for firefighting is you really have no way to collect. Any agreement at the time is going to be under duress, and probably won't hold up in court. If you try to collect on a bad debt, most states won't let you take a person's primary residence, and it puts the FD in the unenviable position of having to collect debts from its citizens. Someone else posted here about the same topic with far better details.
I think it's a good idea, but I don't see how it could be practically applied.

This *is* a political story, inescapably.
One cannot address this issue adequately without discussing the rights and responsibilities of citizens and public servants.
The root of the discussion is what kind of community and society we wish to live in - one of mutual obligation, or one of extreme individualism. This is inherently political.

Hmmm.
I would have guessed by the facial hair and clothing in the video that I saw, they would be volunteers. They wore no duty uniforms. T-shirts, jeans and ball caps.
I could be wrong.

Some of their five pieces of apparatus are 40 years old.

See; that's what I don't understand. Our ambulance service that our district pays a percentage of to operate has a professional billing service. We pay taxes to the ambulance service AND they charge for the ride. You are billed by the professional billing service and if you don't pay, they come after you.
If a fire department uses the SAME tactics, they're A-holes.
I just don't get it.
