WestPhilly, let's put it like this. If you told my driver that I damned her with faint praise, she'd laugh in your face. I'm not one with the gift of words and English idioms, but I do know what is in my heart and for me that is all that counts. Stay safe.
I think it was said well on Rescue Me: (and I don't care if the show is rediculous)

Psychiatrist: What about the women on the department?
Leary (tommy): We don't have any women in this house.
Psychiatrist: Are you intimidated by women?
Tommy: You know it's not about bein' a man or a woman...it is about getting the job done. You could be man, woman, black, white, hispanic, chinese...if you can do the job so I can get home to see my family at night...that is what is most important
Psychiatrist: Are there any Chinese firefighters?
T: Probably ...in China.
Well it's a proven fact that women are not as strong and stuff as some men, but that doesn't mean we can't do the job. I love working with the guys and everything, but they treat me kind of differant, like i'm a little kid or something because i'm a girl. I mean don't get me wrong i like that they look out for me, i just wish they would treat me like one of the guys.
In my FD, we have 4 women FF, and there is no problems.
Melisa, They are just people, they came on the job, had to prove themselves and follow the same 10% rule I described in another article. Ten percent work their butts off and give to the city, department, union and community. 10% don't do jack shit, take advantage to sick leave and make the rest of their crew carry their weight. The middle group has some good, some excellent employees and some that just get a paycheck. Just like the guys!
Our department has 300 FF, 17 of which are women. We had one woman medically retired from a fire injury. We have women as medics/FF, lieutenants, Fire Marshal (BC rank) and fire marshals office (3). They all started out as FF in the stations and had to complete the same probation as the men. They proved themselves and got the job. Washington banned hiring lists that give preference about 15 years ago. All (with one exception) of our women were hired off of a preferential lists in the 80/90's. They were not high enough on the hire list to get the job but were hired off of a separate list for females. Since the preference list was banned we have not hired any women, because only a few have finished high enough on the written test to take the physical agility/strength test. Why, I do not know.
My final word is there are women that are great FF, good FF, adequate FF, poor FF, crap FF, just like the men!
My view is that you have to earn your stay. When I walked through the doors of this great profession nearly 20 years ago I was expected to earn my right to wear the badge of "firefighter". There are good and bad in all things. I have served with some really awesome and talented female firefighters that really know their job and I have served with some females that all they are worried about is not getting their gear dirty or if their nails get chipped. All I ask is that you know your job, get in there and firefighter up and if you arent sure about something, please ask someone. We are here to teach and support one another. Lets work together and make our crews work effieciently together. Remember, always take a tool, never leave your partner, and stay low and stay safe.
ME BEING A FORMER FIRE FIGHTER I WAS TREATED LIKE CRAP BY SOME OF MY PEERS,WHEN I WAS ON CALL ON WEDNESDAY I BUSTED MY ASS TO DO WHAT I WAS ASSIGNED TO DO, I WAS TOLD BY MALE(SORRY BOYS),TO GO HOME,THAT I WAS ONLY ON THIS EARTH TO BE BEAUTIFUL,BAREFOOT AND PREGNANT. THERE WAS NO PLACE FOR ME IN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
You are yelling again, caps when typing means yelling, DO NOT DO IT :0). It may be that they were pulling your chain, you seem to get upset, so they pull on the chain and you get upset some more. You stop and they will stop because it won't be fun anymore.
sorry
sorry. I just want people to know from my own prospective and understand i did'nt join the fire department to look for a guy etc. i joined to prove to myself i could do that sort of thing. i screwed up a few times and got up and brushed myself off. lol.
You did well, both with the caps and brushing yourself off, keep it up. It is a life long process.
took forever, even got back with that guy!
