What kind of nozzels do you use?

A couple years ago or department purchased SaberJet Nozzels for all of our trucks. They were supposed to be "the best nozzles out there". Most every person on the department seems to like them but I personally don't like them at all. I just wanted to see what everyone else's opinions were on them and what you think the best nozzels is.

Well, like most things in the fire service nozzles are tools, and different applications require the right tool. That being said, we use TFT automatic nozzles a majority of the time. But if you need the reach like with a fire confined to the rear of one store in a strip mall, or inside an enclosed mall a smooth bore on a large hand line or on a blitzfire type master stream will work nicely reaching fire in the rear of the store.
That's just my opinion.

We use the Protek Selectable Gallonage we got form brushtruck.com, they work well for us and we like them . Our department is small and we looked at what was out there and chose the Protek, no regrets about the choice, check them out and check out our website as well......... www.waylandvfd.webs.com

Elkhart Chief - Combination FOG Nozzles

175 GPM at 75 PSI at the tip for our inch and three quarter lines.
250 GPM at 50 PSI at the tip for our two and half handlines.

These nozzle use less pump discharge pressure, provide the user with ease of movement, and a dramatically lower NR-Nozzle Reaction. I am not a smooth bore hater....we also have a compliment of smooth bore nozzles.

As I stated we utilize CAFS and with that being said smooth bore nozzles work best for CAFS operations. Combo nozzles break up the solution thus not giving you the desired application.

We have tried several types and brands over the years. I like the saberjets with the single shutoff. This option simplifies the operation however it only allows use of one stream at a time not both in combo as does the dual shutoff model. We also have tried the Vindicator nozzle. This nozzle is a cross between a solid bore and an aspirating nozzle. It works very well with Class A foam or water only. It showed some very good results in some field tests w/ the FDNY. We like these for the same situations where a solid stream would be used. Again trials and training as well as your local exposures should dictate your nozzle choice as well as handline layouts.

But we use the Chief nozzles, with the break off tips, so it goes from fog to a regular smooth bore, and 2 1/2 is a smooth bore

first line we pull is the smooth bore second line in goes in with the Fog nozzle still attached and if need be they can break it down.

We use Combo nozzles @ my dept. I've used smooth bore and they work well for knocking down the fire but I like the combo nozzle for hydrolic ventilation.

Our department favors the Akron TurboJet, we have a few Elky's but only by donation. Anyone out there have any experience with the "ZeroTorque" adapters by Akron? I've seen em in the catalogs the past couple of years and they got me curious.

We use TFT's automatic adjustables on our preconnected lines. I dont like how big and bulky they are. We have had problems with the spring inside seizing up and not giving us the pressure we need. I like a combination of smooth bore and selectable gallonage adjustable nozzles.

We use TFT low pressure nozzles and they seem to work really well, I have no complaint with them.

Remember that nozzles are designed for the most part by nozzle salesmen. Also, these salesmen gear their sales pitch towards Chiefs and not towards lowly nozzlemen(the guys on the pipe). So, no nozzle is actually designed with your best interests. If you base your decision on NFPA standards, then every nozzle has its applications(i.e. high rise fires=smooth bore nozzles, vehicle fires=adjustable fog nozzles,etc...) I personally do not like Saber Jets or an apparatus having only one type of nozzle. Saber Jets are good for their applications, but please give us options in line and nozzle selection. Even though I am a smooth bore guy at heart, I understand the different applications for different nozzles and the importance of being well trained with any of them.
