Can anyone tell me if the bent piece of metal on top of an N5A New Yorker, where the rims come together behind the eagle, serves a specific purpose? Can it be taken off? I don't particularly like the way it looks on there but I don't know enough about leathers to decide if I take it off or leave it.

I say it holds all the other pieces together.. I would not remove it.
I could be wrong on this and please any one correct me if I am. At the top of the helmet just behind the eagle that bent piece of metal is there to protect the ends of the leather were all the seams come together.
DO NOT TAKE IT OFF!! IT HOLDS THE SEAMS INTACT!!! Paint it the color of the helmet so it blends in.
