I have been wanting to be a firefighter for several years, put myself through a Basic Fire Academy, myself and many other friends show up at every department test we can along with several hundred to thousands of people... I even work in a fire department full time on the ambulance program.

But today there are huge fires just 5 miles from my own home, and I am watching on TV houses and apartments burn down with no firefighters on scene cause there is not enough resources.

I know I am new to the fire service and still have lots to learn, but I don't get how houses can be burning out of control when there are thousands of people desperately wanting to get out there and help. I know there must be some reasons... but in my mind it doesn't make sense since I wanna be out there helping but instead just watch it on TV.

Here is a view of the smoke over my house this afternoon...

I agree, but it seems to me like they fighting directly instead of indirectly to get a hand on the fires..
Hey Mike,

Does SB County use CL-414 Super Scoopers like LA has? Do you know if they are as effective as they look being so close to the ocean? TCSS
Jason, These types of incidents are intense and can change in the blink of an eye. California has very strict standards in regard to working as a firefighter. They have these rules for a reason. Your heart is in the right spot, but your training, experience and personal knowledge need to be enhanced through education and time. Be patient, do your homework and always be very careful what you post on public websites. HR folks now routinely do searches on the internet, including the FFN to look at your profile and how your express yourself. Just a thought. Good luck. MIke
No wuckin flurries mate, except I can't stand BBQ'd seafood! Usually it's prawns, I don't like them either...
Jason - "How dangerous is it gonna be to put the unexperienced guys on just structure protection?". Very. Is that succinct enough? Structure protection in an urban fringe conflagration like Ca has at the moment is very dangerous. Did you look at the link I posted?
Thanks a lot Mike for the clear up:)
Well you have to realize is sure people want to help but, most people are scare of getting in the middle of a fire and saving a life.

Sure people want to help but, most are scared is they don't want to go in the middle of a fire and save a life.
Nate, this has nothing to do with the OP at all. True, yes, but irrelevant in this thread. And did you have to post virtually the same thing multiple times?
Obviously yes Tony
