Massive inferno destroys mill complex in Woonsocket, RI

A box alarm brought firefighters to this massive mill complex shortly after 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 85 Fairmount St. Nothing was showing from the complex when companies arrived but that changed within a few minutes.

Smoke started to show from the rear of the complex and within a few minutes, flames spread so rapidly, firefighters had to exit the building and setup for what was going to be a long night and next couple of days.

A general alarm was called and brought in mutual aid companies from over 20 communities from Rhode Island and Massachusetts to battle this inferno.

2 firefighters were injured.

6 alarm mill fire in Woonsocket, RI

Shortly before 1pm on Feb 27, 2011, multiple calls came into Fire Alarm reporting a fire at the long vacant Seville Dye on First Ave in the Fairmount section of the city. Engine 6 was stationed only a few blocks away before the station was closed and ladder 1 was not in service because of budget cuts.

Heavy smoke and flames were visible from the rear of the structure on arrival. Being a "marked" building, the operations were going to be exterior only. Companies laid LDH and set up master streams but not before finding several frozen fire hydrants.

Low water pressure and toxic (testing showed 2x more toxicity due to the chemicals inside the mill) smoke with visibility at zero at times made fighting this fire more difficult. Police officers had to wear masks because of the smoke.

The neighborhood had to be evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Fire Spreads to Exposure in Woonsocket

Just before noon on Dec 10, 2010, multiple calls came into the fire alarm office reporting a house fire on Rebekah St which is in the cities north end.

Engine 3 arrived and reported heavy fire from the rear of building extending to the exposure. An aggressive interior attack was initiated on both buildings. The exposure was quickly brought under control but fire had taken control of the attic and forced firefighters to evacuate the building and fight it from the outside.

The fire quickly reached 3 alarms bringing in Blackstone, Bellingham, No. Smithfield and Cumberland Hill to the scene.

another multi family goes up in Woonsocket, RI

Firefighters in the city have been keeping busy as temperatures and humidity remain high this summer.

This blaze on Olo St, in the cities Fairmount section erupted late afternoon on July 26, 2010. All occupants got out safely.

Heavy fire was showing from the rear of the 2nd and 3rd floors on arrival and extended into the attic. Companies initiated a typical aggressive interior attack but due to limited manpower, a 2nd alarm and out of town companies were needed to bring this fire under control.

Tough Battle for Woonsocket, RI Firefighters

Tin ceilings, heavy fire and smoke and minimal manpower made fighting this fire on Park Ave in Woonsocket, RI a difficult one.

Fire originated on the 1st floor extended into the attic before firefighters were able to bring this stubborn blaze under control.

The fire came in around 5:30pm on July 23, 2010 and 2 civilians were transported to the local hospital with smoke inhalation and anxiety.
