Hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally and is also produced by human activities. Just a few breaths of air containing high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas can cause death. Hydrogen sulfide (or hydrogen sulphide) is the chemical compound with the formula H2S. It is a colorless, very poisonous, flammable gas with the characteristic foul odor of rotten eggs. It often results from the bacterial breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, such as in swamps and sewers (anaerobic digestion). It also occurs in volcanic gases, natural gas, and some well waters. The human body produces small amounts of H2S and uses it as a signaling molecule.

Confined Space Entry Rescue

While technical rescues such as freeing someone from the wreckage of an automobile, train or aircraft accident or building collapse is the usual province of Rescue teams, HAZMAT teams in some jurisdiction are trained and expected to perform confined/enclosed space rescues (though in some jurisdictions both the Rescue squad and the HAZMAT team may be trained to perform such rescues).

Operations in confined spaces are one of the most dangerous types of missions that a HAZMAT responder can undertake. It is a world filled with such dangers as toxic gases, combustable gases, oxygen deficincy and very tight and dark spaces. Temperatures in a confined space maybe extreme, ranging from very hot to very cold.

Confined spaces can be very unforgiving and even a single, simple mistake due to absent-mindedness or poor judgement can cost a life.

This video from WorkSafeBC is designed for municipal workers and illustrates the basic rules for working in confined spaces. Oxygen deficiency and other potential dangers are covered. In addition, the health effects and physical characteristics of toxic gases including carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, and methane are examined.

WorkSafeBC is a Canadian agency that regulates industrial worker health and safety. Basically, the Canadian version of America's OSHA.

This video covers a timely subject for many Hazardous Materials Response Teams as many such teams are expected to work in confined (also refered to as enclosed) spaces and perform rescues in such locations.
