This video is intended for Firefighters who are researching components for a Personal Escape/Safety System - Specifically the various types of Anchors that are available.

In the video I will be reviewing the most common commercially made anchoring devices on the market - Including: The CROSBY, FESH, MERIDIAN, NARS/RPI, PMI SPEC, CMC FLASH and new FLASH LITE, PETZL, STERLING LIGHTNING and SKEDCO - Both the Folding style and Solid version.

Single Firefighter Hasty Harness for Victim Rescue

This video will explain in detail an alternate method for an individual Firefighter to fasten a Full Body Hasty Harness onto a victim. This is just ONE example of the MANY types of harnesses available for rescuers to use. Some of the factors that make this harness efficient include the ability to apply it to either a Civilian or a Firefighter wearing a scba.

Another advantage is the harness can be applied to the victim whether they’re lying prone on their stomach or supine on their back. This version works extremely well for vertical rescue - Such as pulling a victim out a hole or lowering them out a window or off a roof. Just like any piece of equipment or procedure, training and experience are key elements to determine what will be best for a specific situation.

"BYRNE" Technique - Using a Personal Escape System for Victim Rescue

This video will demonstrate another method for using an Escape System for victim rescue. This procedure was developed by a FF from the District of Columbia Fire Department in Washington DC - His name is Kelly Byrne (pronounced Burn). Out of respect for Kelly, I call it the "BYRNE" technique.

Kelly's method is a very effective way to save a victim and the rescuer when both are trapped on an upper floor with no other avenue for escape. It's important to note that none of the manufacturers of Escape Hooks necessarily condone, authorize or certify using their devices as DCDs (Descent Control Devices). The user takes full responsibility for deviating from the intended use of any anchoring device or escape system component other than what it was originally certified and designed for.

This is a life and death procedure that should only be attempted after extensive training and when all other means of rescue or escape have been exhausted or are not available. Always incorporate full fall arrest protection when practicing any of the procedures shown in this video.
