Firefighter Emergency Bailout Technique - The "Hang and Drop"

This video will demonstrate the "Hang and Drop" technique. It's a skill used to exit a window when a ladder is not available and the trapped Firefighter is not carrying a Personal Escape or Safety System.

This procedure should be considered a last resort to escape a hostile environment when all other means of egress are cut off or not existent. A key element to this tactic is getting both hands on the sill so you can position your body back upright with your feet below you. Your legs should be straight (or just slightly bent) with your knees and feet touching each other - When you impact the ground you want to immediately bend your knees and role onto your side to minimize the shock on your body. This technique is sometimes referred to as the "Parachute Landing Fall" or "Stuntman Role".

The effectiveness of this procedure will rely on many factors, including: Fire conditions, your fatigue level, if your gloves are wet, the size of the window, the number of Firefighters needing to exit and the obstructions or hazards below the window and on the ground - Are just a few! Your best bet is prevention, but when all else fails carrying survival equipment such as an Escape/Safety System may mean the difference between getting out alive or not getting out at all.

This is a comprehensive video on the Firefighter Ladder Bail Emergency Egress Technique. The 3 most commonly taught methods will be discussed and demonstrated in detail - Including the “Hook 2 - Go 4”, “Butterfly/Extended Reach” and the “Toe Hook”. Also included will be a review of the “Ladder Slide”.

For the Ladder Bail and Slide to be effective, firefighters need to proactively place ground ladders as early as possible to the windows/floors that members are and will be operating on. Beyond proper placement, firefighters need to safely train on this procedure long before it would ever have to be implemented in the field - Determine and become proficient on the technique YOU like best before it's necessary to use it in an emergency!

HANOVER TOWNSHIP 1ST ALARM DWELLING FIRE 6-10-12

Hanover Township, Pa.-- Hanover Twp was first dispatched to the area of Yorkshire Drive for a smoke investigation while units where checking the area dispatch updated the run to a dwelling fire in the 2900 block of Kenwick Drive.

Arriving Chief 15-51 took command advised the worker and filled out the 1st alarm assignment. CMD requested 15-12 to lay in and crews go to work with a 1.5, truck 15-21 set up and staged for operations.

Bulk of the fire appeared to be held to the 2nd floor which showed signs of extensive damage. Negative injuries were reported cmd requested the State Fire Marshal to the scene.

LEITHSVILLE FIRE CO. 3RD ALARM FATAL BUILDING FIRE 5-24-12

Northampton County, Pa-- A dump truck crashed through the Leithsville Volunteer Fire Company this afternoon and burst into flames. The station located at 1995 Leithsville Road in Hellertown, PA was fully involved on arrival consuming everything in the building including the fire apparatus.

The fire went to 3 alarms bringing in help from Lehigh, Bucks and Montgomery County,Pa. Companies went into defensive operations on arrival with ladder pipes, ground monitors and 2.5's. Tenders arrived from all 4 counties filling multiple port-a tanks at the scene and assisting with nursing operations behind the fire building.

Heavy equipment arrived and started to pull the rear of the building apart so firefighters cith extensive overhaul.ould gain access to the remaining fire. Departments had the fire under-control roughly 2 hours in and still remain on scene tonight w

ALLENTOWN 2ND ALARM HOUSE FIRE 5-18-12

Allentown, Pa.- Firefighters working in the 200 block of N. Jordan on a 2nd alarm house fire. Crews reported heavy fire from the 2nd floor on arrival with extension to the 3rd floor. The home suffered extensive damage and appeared the 2nd floor was gutted from front to rear of the home. Negative injuries were reported, Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced family.
