On 5/14/2010 at approximately 1900 hours Station 22 and 24 were dispatched for a possible brush fire near 23816 Stoney Run Road. Brush 22 responded with 3 Volunteers and Lt Edwards. After Brush 22 responded, communications advised that this was a vehicle fire. Engine Tanker 22 then responded with 4 volunteers and A/C Derham. Brush 22 had some difficulty finding the fire due to the remote location. Engine Tanker 22 arrived on the scene with a working vehicle fire. A/C Derham had the Stoney Run Road Command. The crew pulled an 1 3/4" attack line and advance up the hill to the fire. The vehicle that was on fire was an old milk truck that had been junked. The crew quickly knocked down the fire and then begun some overhaul on the vehicle. The cause of the fire was a lighting strike to a nearby tree. The lighting strike blew out the top of the tree throwing chunks of materials about 30 feet in every directions. The tree had a section of bark about 4 or 5 inches wide removed all the way down the tree to the ground. There was also a hole in the ground at the base of the tree. There was a lot of metal in the area that was touching the trees and the old milk truck. This must have been a good conductor for the lighting to travel to the milk truck, causing the fire. Crew remained on the scene for approximately 30 mins before returning to service. Units on the scene were Engine Tanker 22, Brush 22, and Engine 24-13.
