By holding it from beneth you can use your upper body strength to secure the ladder against the wall/roof/etc. Putting a foot against it from the front isn't much better than setting a brick against it.

Hi Gus, Thanks for the information. Yes, I guess it is more secure to hold the ladder from underneath than from in front of the rungs. I'm glad no one was seriously hurt.

He was holding it correctly... until he walked off.

Wow, poor guy/gal. I think his/her brother should have braced the ladder from the outside of the bottom rungs, and not walked away, at least not until the firefighter was actually on the roof. On a lighter note, you know what they say, standing underneath ladders brings bad luck. Glad no one seems to have been injured. Stay safe.
