I agree, the use of USED bunker gear could pose a problem for firefighter safety. I see no problem using the gear while the firefighter is going through training like rolling hose, swinging axe, climbing ladders, practice donning and doffing scba, but NOT to be used in any live fire training. Fitting is very important. I saw a firefighter once with skin tight turn-out coat who got burned in a training fire on his shoulder. They have to be fitted and sized correctly. In fact, a used set of gear would be great for a new member, because until a firefighter becomes certified at least Firefighter I, they should not be combating fires. That would give your department about a year to get gear for the new members. Shop around, there are alot of vendors with NFPA approved turn-outs that does not carry the big name vendors that will save you alot of money. Be safe and take care. Lew

Michael's comments are well founded and correct . Also the fit of bunker gear is cruitial to proper protection and movement. I know times are tough but perhaps you can come up with some fund raising projects to defray the costs. Some departments in my area went door to door to advise of the needs and inform the public of the situation a lot of support was found. Incorperate it with home fire safety visits , such as smoke detector testing or home fire inspections.
