Here’s a piece brother firefighter Charlie Hillman (Norwalk (OH) FD) wrote about a chimney fire last winter.  He brings up several fireground basics that we all should remember.  Pass it on!

On Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 0850 hours the Willard Fire and Rescue department was dispatched to a chimney fire.  The chimney fire was reported in a 1 ½ story wood-framed, single family dwelling, ranch style home.  Upon arrival the supervisor initiated incident command and a performed a 360size-up and radioed that there was heavy white/gray smoke issuing from the chimney.  The homeowner had been attempting to clean the chimney with a homemade device that consisted of a long piece of copper tubing with a brush attached to the end of the tubing.  The tubing was connected at the top of the chimney with a long piece of chain.  The supervisor ordered the engine crew to ladder the roof to remove the burning brush from the inside of the chimney.  Read on.

You did good job adapting to the problem. Another consideration to steep roof pitches is to use an extension ladder to the ridge. Extend to the length needed to reach the ridge line or fully extend it, then lower into the roof, resting the ladder beams on the roof slope itself. Just remember that this angle is going to be less than the optimal to climb and the base will need to be secured. If the fly section fails to reach the ridge than the roof ladder could the be used for extra reach. We have many older home with steep slope roofs that are constructed of cedar shakes or slate, both can be extremely slippery with any moisture.

Very well written article. the points mentioned regarding an icy roof that is longer than the roof ladder are important to think about as we head into the winter months, with a high possibility of this situation being present. thank you for giving us another tool to add to the toolbox.
