Thank God after 3 years of "dear johns" and "sorry about your lucks" we received a much needed grant from the Feds. We received approx 86,000 dollars for Operations and Firefighter Safety for new SCBA. Ours where in dire need of replacement. This is a great addition to our personal protection. We received a grant in 2005 for 25 new sets of turnouts, helmets, boots and hoods. I am extremely pleased that we as a department can finally provide a proper, safe full PPE ensemble for our firefighters. In all honesty I believe that any department that applies for essential protective equipment, such as turnout gear and SCBA, under the federal government should receive this grant almost automatically. I find it particularly frustrating to see the same departments every year receiving grants, astronomic grants, for equipment and vehicles when several small departments such as my own scrape for funding. This is not to say that larger departments don't need funding but I believe there should be less of a disparity between the "haves' and the "have nots." Wrapping it up here I am ecstatic that we are going to be moving into the 21st century with our SCBA and I extend a "Good luck!" and "keep up hope!" message to all of you who are still waiting for a grant. As the little kid said in Angels in the Outfield "hey it could happen!"

We got the need more info letter, which usuall means that you got the grant. In all the years of the we have only been turned down 3 times. The first was because we did not get our paperwork in on time. The other we were just denied. After the first time we started using a grant writer. We pay her $500, provide a list of the things we want and she takes it from there. So far we have gotten 5" hose, complete sets of turnouts(pants, coat, gloves, hood, helment, boots),brush truck, updated to scba's. The grant we will be getting now will get us 10 new high pressure scba's,a in station compressor to fill the new bottles and new h.p. tanks to go on our support truck to fill bottles on scene. The classes to learn how to fill out the grant paperwork are great but for a small investment we have bettered our chances 5 times in seven years. And while it might be true about the call volume vs dollars we have learned that if you prove the need you will get the dollars.

Not to defend the Feds, and we have only received 1 in 7 tries, but there is a little known, and I don’t think it’s published anywhere, figure in that it’s a call volume verses dollars asked. Just one of the many hoops to jump through to win the lottery.
