As most of you know there's one annual fire service ritual that has the greatest impact on the community. I'm not talking about the annual "Come Meet Santa Claus" parade and party at the fire station. And I'm not talking about the once-a-year chicken barbeque or pancake breakfast.…

Conversion

I'm barely awakened from my 10:30am nap when an EMT student taps my shoulder.

"Um, Sam," he says quietly, "I think you need to get up; there's a call, and I think it's a code."

Up like a shot, I grab my boots and head towards the rig.

"78 year old male, unconscious, not breathing. Sam, I need you to unhook the monitor, grab the drug box and the IV box and put them all on the stretcher. Can you do this while I drive?"

"Yep," I say regrettably as I hit the wall, "not a… Continue

One of those days...

It's kind of been one of those days. Not the kind that find you unable to catch your breath from running back to back calls, but one of those when you feel kind of down. You feel like you need a diversion, whatever that may be. Personally I'm in my appartment lifting weights at the moment because I've really been needing to do that for a while, but I keep telling myself that I'm too busy. Then there was the fact that I had to break up with my girlfriend the other day, and believe me that…

Just a thought.............

Ex Wife

The Devil Loves Grey

You know I was thinking the other day if the devil had a favorite color what would it be…..grey. Why would I waste the time thinking of something like this you may ask? Well maybe because people never cease to amaze me with the things they do. Have you noticed nowadays people live by the code of CYA(cover your ass!)

For example, its like saying "I Love You," instead of hearing those three words returned…

When GOD Made EMS Providers

THE DAY MEDICS WERE MADE

When God Made EMS Providers...

When the Lord made EMT's and Paramedics, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And the Lord said, "Have you read the specs on this order? An EMS provider has…

oh my god, i'm a girl!!

I have never met such a chauvinistic bunch of emergency service workers until I joined Firefighter Nation.

I've noticed posts made by female firefighters complaining that they are treated differently within their departments because of their sex and I admit, I was surprised. It's something I've not encountered within my own company. Why would your gender make any difference if you are there to do the same job? So I reply to a few posts, letting them know that it isn't the same…

Fire Class

There was some mixed feelings about going through the firefighter class. In one instance, you wish it would be all over with, but in other instances, you are having so much fun that you don't want it to end. It is great that I'll be going to graduation Friday December 7, 2007, but I didn't want the classes to end. In all actuality, the learning and training will never end, but it was a pleasure working with my classmates, and I will miss working with… Continue

HELP YOUR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS

HELP YOUR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS! When you see BLUE LIGHTS - please PULL OVER!! It will only take a few seconds - but in an emergency seconds count! A car with a flashing BLUE LIGHTS is a volunteer firefighter responding to an emergency. BLUE LIGHTS DO NOT give volunteers any special privileges. They are courtesy lights only. The BLUE LIGHTS is to alert other drivers that we are on our way to an emergency. It's up to other drivers to pull over and let us go by! Please let us pass. It could give… Continue

phone call

Ok..so here is my first FFN blog.. i have blogged about stuff on myspace and gotten laughs and marks or whatever the hell they give you on there, but none of it really means much..lemme tell ya about a call i got the other day from one of our cadets..

This particular cadet is super gung ho when it comes to the fire service. He took a level one class earlier this yr, gives a ton of time to riding when he can, and pretty much knows his stuff for a cadet. He was calling to tell me that…

The funeral

My Honor Guard just helped out with a funeral for a firefighter from a neighboring agency. It really affected me, I think that I'm just starting to get old and emotional. A few of my guys knew the fallen firefighter. I felt like I needed to do something more, so I put fingers to keyboard and I wrote a little synapsis of what a firefighter funeral is like. Just something that civilians might be able to read and relate to.

I wanted to share it with my brothers and sisters…

Seatbelts again.....nag, nag, nag

Someone, somewhere on here who regularly reads new blogs is going to see this and say to themself..."There she goes again, nagging about seatbelts again. What's the big deal?"

I'll tell you what the big deal is....firefighters are dying because they're too stupid or too invincible to wear their seatbelts. Here's another article about wearing them that I thought was good reading.…
