Chicago Fire Dept Calendar Party

Thursday, September 27, was the annual Chicago Fire Dept Calendar Party. I knew I was in for a good time, but little did I know it was going to be one of the best nights of my life. The event was held at a huge bar called "cubbie bear", right next to wrigley. The event went from 7-10. The engineer of "my" company picked me up at around 645. In the car was michelle, the woman who lives next door and visits the firehouse just as often as i do. Awesome chic! We get there and sit for a while but…

Trigger Happy

First of all, Fast Company [www.fastcompany.com] is the only magazine I read cover-to-cover every month. That says a lot considering all of the firefighting trade journals I read monthly.

I use Fast Company for my Fire Company. Without fail, I…

lack of new fire fighters

i've noticed sence i've been on the department that the dream of being a firefighter is not all that it used to be. kids now days dont dream about beeing a fireman. and the kids that did dream of it dont dream of it any more. so there is lack of intrest. so the departments suffer with out personell and calls dont get made. so pepole dont get the help thay need.

Just Me

I have strong beliefs about things, a crazy EMS humor, and I love my job. A full time paramedic student (P4), and pretty much a study geek. I believe that knowledge, skill, and ability are what makes a solid fondation for any firefighter or Emt of any level. Presenting ones self as a professional is what seperates the good from the best. I don't believe in giving up, ever. I think that every day is a chance to learn something new, every call has its moments, and even the craziest call is… Continue

firefighter down

A 19 year old Sharon Hill Firefighter remains in very critical condition with burns and related traumatic injuries after being struck and trapped by the exterior collapse of a garage at a fire call last night. Initially the cops arrived confirming a working fire in a detached 3 car garage. Companies arrived and went with an exterior attack using 1-3/4" hand lines. While they were operating, there was a outward collapse of a wall. The Chief estimated that they were about 8 feet outside of the… Continue

History of the Maltese Cross

W hen a courageous band of crusaders known as the Knights of St. John, fought the Saracens for possession of the holy land, they encountered a new weapon unknown to European warriors. It was a simple, but a horrible device of war, it wrought excruciating pain and agonizing death upon the brave

fighters for the cross. The Saracen's weapon was fire. …

Rolling stops vs. complete stops

We were up in the Adirondacks this past week at the Au Sable Forks Fire Department giving the FASNY "CSI, New York: Crash Scene Investigation" seminar. Little did we know we'd be competing with a forest fire for attendees, but the group was enthusiastic, attentive, and asked some great questions.

One item that came up for discussion during the break was whether it's better to come to a complete stop at a dicey intersection or just slow to a rolling stop? The recommended course of…

BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - A fire station caught on fire Tuesday night. It happened in the small town of Bishopville. The fast response of Lee County firefighters and emergency workers helped avoid a total loss.

Lt. Brian Eargle says, "It's obvious no one is safe from fire. It can happen to anyone at anytime. Fire - it doesn't care who it picks."
