Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

I am writing this post the morning after a crazy summer storm in this part of New Jersey. Today the morning is quiet, but last night while I was about 35 miles away from home my pager just kept going off.

Last night I was with some old friends for dinner, people I grew up with, who really couldn't quite understand my angst as the pager kept beeping and I was texted to my cell phone with the pages. I've been on calls during storms before, with downed wires, lightening hitting trees,… Continue

What love means to me

I've had a lot of people ask me what I thought love was or is or what it means. I've been trying to figure out exactly where i stand on that and still dont know. I know what I think it should be but that doesnt make it so. There are so many different kinds of love.

My true and complete love is for my children. They are my world. I would lay down my life for them without a second thought. They make me want to be the best me i can possibly be. I think that is the closest thing I will ever… Continue

A few Pittsburgh Fire Bureau photographs I took

Here are some decent pictures I took while recently in Pittsburgh that are more firefighter related.

Pittsburgh's iconic black and gold theme even resonates down to their fire plugs.

Pittsburgh Fire Bureau's 24 House, at S 18th St and Mary St in the city's famous South Side neighborhood, with downtown buildings Mellon Bank and USX Tower in the background.

Well - back from the beach! HAD A BLAST!! The picture is of me and 2 of my new friends. They are members of the NYFD Shields Pipe & Drum Corps who gave a sample of their FANTASTIC talents at the Firefighter Celebration on Friday night at Broadway at the Beach. Does RIT really work?

Does RIT really work?

Does RIT really work? There is a lot of evidence that RIT teams, no matter how well-trained, are ineffective in saving firefighters in real-life Mayday situations. If this were not the case, we’d be hearing RIT success stories on a daily basis. We don’t.

There are numerous accounts of ineffective RIT responses. Here are a… Continue

Still Out There, But Slightly Swamped

My family (or as you could guess, my wife) seems to give me the best gifts. While not much can top a little SCUBA diving with the whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium (my birthday present this year, but I actually did the dive this past weekend), for Father’s Day this year my family (read: wife) gave me the super-cool T-Mobile Wing that I have been able to track my life with while on the road, which is a lot of the time. Just ask my boss what “a lot of time” is defined as.

First DOA

For the second time today, I stand in line at the local ice-cream shop. This time, I manage to get my order in and make idle chit-chat with the couple sitting next to me. The boys wait outside, in the medic, enjoying their treats while I, the probie, wait inside with a grumbling stomach. We were here about 30 minutes ago before the tones dropped, sending us on an engine run that would be cancelled before we even got there. This time, however, the tones drop and the voice on my walkie tells me… Continue
