I shed a tear today . . .

I shed a tear today in front of my kids. I was not ashamed nor did I try to hid it. At noon I took my 7 yr old twins and 3 year old to the court house square. We stopped at each white cross displayed in perfect symetry in front of our majestic 1878 court house. We passed at each cross as i read the name of the soldier who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

I paused longer at the name of a marine who I went to high school with. We knelt in front of his cross as I said a prayer.… Continue

Good Luck, Bad Luck, and SOGs

We're supposed to be responders to All Hazards - in other words, we don't do just one thing. In the range of things we do, it never ceases to amaze me how many times I hear or see really bad ideas espoused as the way to do things. Examples abound;

1) Refusing to wear seat belts in the rig "So we can go right to work at the scene".

2) Putting a vent crew on the roof… Continue

On leave till I'm ready to go back...

So as some of you probably don't know... I'm about five months pregnant. Doing it the single route as the husband and I didn't work out. He's sworn off the baby and myself. I'd posted some things about this at the time when the drama went to hell.

My fire dept was forced to put me on leave till after the birth. Our trustees felt that there was to much risk for my child, myself, and of course it would put the patient care in somewhat of a tid bit of jeopardy as my doctor gave me a… Continue

Remembering and Honoring those who serve "Double Duty"

I'm not quite sure what my inspiration was to write this, but the more I thought about it I thought to myself, as Firefighters we are really good at remembering our countries veterans and we are really passionate about remebering our fallen brothers ans sisters in the Fire Service but, I haven't seen much where we really truly honor those who are our nations True Heros, Those who serve "Double Duty".

The more I thought about this subject I started to realize how many people I know that… Continue

The New Order

Well folks its me once again! And I'm so happy its unbelievable! I can finally see that I am making a difference in the department. When I was elected Chief, I made a promise to all of our members that I would increase our class work. To that end, by the first Thursday in May, my department will have 8 new DOT Certified First Responders. Currently, its just myself and a Captain who are certified. We were part of the first class ever held in the county. Thirteen graduated in that class from 4… Continue

Memorial Day 2009

On Memorial Day we should - and most do - remember and honor those who have given their lives for this great country. We should also remember and thank those who have served our country in wartime or in peace. There are several men that I remember quite often, and not just once a year. I certainly don’t need a reminder from anyone to recall them to my memory. Let me tell you about them.

My great-great grandfather, Ira S. Thurber, was a Lieutenant in the 64th Regiment, New York State… Continue

the open road calls

The open road is calling to warm and sunny places yet to be discovered, seen and enjoyed. Come along and ride with me to adventure and fun. It is discovered when seriousness and work are left behind to those who never stop working long enough to even realize that they are now old and tired. Don’t waste another gorgeous day or weekend at the office doing stupid things that could be done next week or another day by someone else locked into… Continue

Thoughts!

while walking down a stony path one day I spotted a tiny pebble in the midst of the stones and knelt to pick it up. I quickly glanced at it and put it in my pocket moving on down the path.

A few weeks later I was sitting on a bench in the yard just relaxing and I reached into my coat pocket and found the small stone I had picked up that day. Turning it over and really looking at it I saw that It was so beautiful to my eyes. Smooth and translucent with colors of Opal and fire running… Continue

Were you born stupid, or did you have to work at it?

People who know me and have seen me work, often ask me why I am no longer a Paramedic. There are several reasons, but one reason might be illustrated by the linked article.

Every day it amazes me that the human race has lasted this long. Now before I start getting poison emails, let it be known; I do not think ALL EMS people are this way. I know many many fine medics. Intelligent, capable, caring, etc. But over the last several years, I have witnessed class after class, of, for the… Continue

Dear Editor Halton and Lt. McCormack …about your FDIC presentations

I was a late commentator on the FDIC big room presentations this year, posting my impression ten days ago (HERE). I shared my opinion that Halton likes to force us out of our comfort zones and that I was more comfortable with McCormack’s personal opinion on fireground risk analysis.

I am in the process of editing the second edition manuscript for… Continue
