How to Prolong Fire Department Equipment Life

As firefighters, we have a lot riding on our equipment. We demand more out of our gear than practically any other profession, because if it fails, it can cost a whole lot more than just money. How, then, can we ensure that our equipment doesn’t break down when we need it the most?

The answer is simple: check your equipment regularly. This seems like a no-brainer, but when you consider the realities of the…

What's Working? What's Not?

Start, Stop, Continue is a well-known method for feedback that many organizations and teams use to gauge effectiveness. You simply ask:

  • What can we start doing that will make us more effective?
  • What can we stop doing that makes us less effective?
  • What can we continue to do that’s providing value to…

Can we help a fellow firefighter/paramedic

Hello everyone,

A good friend and fellow Firefighter/ Paramedic was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Colon Cancer at the young age of 32. One of his simple pleasures in life is collecting Fire/ EMS patches. He only has a few and they are all local ones. I was really hoping to show him support from all over the country by collecting patches from all over for him. If anyone is willing to help it would be greatly appreciated!!

Fire Station Cardio Workout Option(s)

I've had a lot of requests for workout options that can be performed at the station with minimal equipment.  Here is an option I created for a firefighter/medic that has no equipment and only some stairs and a parking lot. This can be used as a cardio interval training workout day (for those following the 28-day Quickstart Program) and/or as a good workout to get the blood flowing.   Give it a…

On-Duty Firefighter (Fire Rescue) Workout...

I get a lot of requests to come up with workouts that can be performed on duty with equipment found at the firehouse. The other day, my crew and I performed this intensive 30 minute interval workout.  This workout will get your heart racing, challenge your core and work your muscles.

The workout consists of three, 10 minute intervals each with a different focus.  The first 10 minutes focuses on anaerobic recovery, the second ten minutes on full body strength and the last ten…

Recruitment and Retention.

I'm going to try to give some of my insight why departments fail to get new recruits and fail to retain them.

We see the news reports all over the country. "Local fire departments short on members." We hear departments say we just can't seem to get the young people in are area interested in the fire department.

The question is ARE YOU REALLY TRYING? DO YOU REALLY WANT NEW MEMBERS? Next you will try to tell me…

PPE Preparation

I am just starting my career in the fire department and I'm about 3 weeks away from my PPE. I'm in good physical shape so I'm not too worried about it but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about different workouts you did to prepare for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Color Code of Survival

Earlier this year, I completed a police reserve training course that spanned five months. While there was a massive amount of information to absorb, some of it stood out above the rest. As I mentioned in a previous article, law enforcement and military personnel have spent a great deal of time learning what goes on in the mind of those who serve and protect. Firefighters and police officers have always had that unspoken rivalry…

Midnight Calls
