About Me:
15 years in EMS. Have been involved with many organizations that support the volunteer services. Currently the secretary for Allen County Providers. Which is an organization where the heads of each EMS department come together to exchange information, training dates, updates on DHS info and large community events. Involved with the Junior Firefigher program. The program intends to reach the kids in the school district area that will eventually filter out to 3 area volunteer departments. Training officer and Vice-President for Hoagland.
Day Job:
Full time mom of 2 special needs children and one that is "normal" so far.
I think it kind of began when I was a kid. My Dad was part owner in a company that provided track service to race tracks and drag strips. Part of the responsibilities were fire control and extrication. I can remember as a kid being out in the driveway "rolling the extinguishers". Years later in high school I started dating a guy who was looking to join a volunteer fire department. I changed my goals in life to a life without pay........LOL Married him and now it is a family thing. My oldest daughter who is 15 is in the junior firefighter program that Hoagland just started. My son who is 11 can't wait to join. He's says that he wants to be an elemetary school teacher and a volunteer firefighter. The youngest is only 5, too soon to tell about her. I can't think of a better way to teach so many life lessons, volunteerism, communtiy service, respect, leadership, pride in a job well done, just to name a few. Not to mention you won't find a bigger "extended family".
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Knowing that I made a difference in someone's life.
Top Issues Facing Responders:
The force out of the rual volunteer fire and EMS departments. With the constant change in regulations and training standards, it is becoming more and more difficult to retain members due to the time investment in order to stay current. Many departments are being forced to combine, contract with a city or metropolitan department, or come up with a way to have paid personnel on staff. Or the ultimate fate of closure. It is so sad, because brotherhood and family is strongest amoung the volunteer departments.
