What kind of specific questions did you have in mind on being a firefighter for a living? I will be glad to answer any or call our personnel section at 703-792-6649
Sorry it took awhile to responed. I have been doing army reserves and was at a conference.
The starting pay is 44,000. Yes the cost of living is high in the area but you don't have to live in the county. A lot of our guys live south of PWC and it is cheaper.
It is a great time to join if you feel this is the career for you. The enjoyment you recieve from this profession is amazing. A pension retirment and great benifits helps with that decision. Still have a lot of growth in the department so you don't have to wait until someone retires to move up in the ranks.
The hiring process test is easy (nothign harder than high school level thought process). I usually describe it like taken the military's hiring test, all cognitive. If you go on line to our website it has a downloadable study guide to give you a better idea.
The training is 24 weeks and held at our academy. They teach you just like you were in school. As long as you pay attention you should be fine. Physically the fire training is hard, mentally the EMT is hard. If you study you will be fine.
