About Me:
My department is new and was formed in March 2005 as we consolidated with our neighboring department. East Fallowfield Volunteer Fire Department and Hartstown Volunteer Fire Department became Fallowfield Fire & Rescue. One department with two station. We are a rural fire department.
My husband was a volunteer firefighter for our local department. He spent so much time at the station that I never saw him when he wasnt working, and so I became a social member, then the secretary of the department. One of the guys in the department made a smart comment about female firefighters and me becoming one. So, I joined the fire side of the department and got geared up the next day. I have since went on to become an EMT and active firefighter!
Why I Love Fire/EMS
Being there for the community when they need us the most, and of course to prove that I do it!
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Financial Support. For small departments like mine the ability to generate funding to pay operating expenses is astronomical. Members are forced to spend almost more time on fundraising efforts then on training. There are not enough grants or federal support for volunteer departments. As quickly as america came to realize after 911 what we do everyday , it seems as though it only lastes as long as it took for the ashes to settle. If there was more focus on important isuess such as funding for equipment and trainning we would not be losing so many brothers and sisters in countless ways to the fire service.
